Sahara Hotel...Water Theme Amusement Park?

Now that the Sahara Hotel has shuttered its windows and doors, and the liquidation sale is in full swing, there is a lot of scuttlebutt floating around about the outcome of the prime real estate situated at Sahara Boulevard and the Las Vegas strip.

However, in response to queries, the owners have remained tight-lipped.

Personally, I have been tinkering with the idea of a water-themed amusement park!

After all, a roller-coaster is already on the property and ready to rev up once again.

In addition, a monorail in place to transport tourists to the site in the event my vision pans out.

A few years ago, when I was performing in a live stage production of  "Ghostbusters" at a country fair back east, the cast and I headed off to splash about in the wading pools when the curtain fell each day - and scream bloody-murder - as we excitedly flew down a myriad of water slides for weeks on end.

Talk about a cool and refreshing respite from the sizzling hot mid-day sun!

What say U?

Mandarin Oriental...tea lounge Vegas best-kept secret! Soothing environs to contemplate life!

One of the best-kept secrets in Las Vegas is the soothing Tea Lounge situated next to the Sky Lobby in the Mandarin Oriental on the 23rd floor of the exquisite luxury Hotel.

Once the elevator doors are whisked open, guests are knocked-out by a breathtaking panoramic view of the exotic desert oasis resort, for starters.

The chic upscale nook is not only a cozy environ - but the perfect respite from the throbbing frenzied heartbeat of the glitzy strip below - for sure.

According to my sources, the aesthetic tea room has become a magnet for a handful of guests who prefer to multi-task on their laptops, while they sip on exotic blends of tea, savor a tasty dessert, and meditate on the glorious skyline beyond the ever-popular spanking-new City Center.

One pet peeve, however!

Although management has posted an over-sized menu at the front entrance, the staff  have failed to itemize the charges, for some inexplicable reason.

Perhaps an old axiom rings true.

If you have to ask the cost, maybe you can't afford it?

Or, are the charges so exorbitant, that the prices have been held back to prevent potential customers from being scared off before electing to be seated comfortably inside?

In my estimation, there is a practical (deceitful?) reason behind it.

Once a person is settled in for their afternoon treat, it is doubtful they'll exit in a huff, if the bill-of-fare is too expensive.

Who wants to embarrass themselves in front of a posse of prying guests (or be considered cheap) after all?

Enjoy!

Mr. Manners...rude Bellagio waitress shakes down tourists for tips! Poor Etiquette!

An incident at the Bellagio Hotel & Casino yesterday afternoon prompted me to enlist the aid of Mr. Manners to pen an essay on proper etiquette when it comes to tipping in glitzy Las Vegas (or elsewhere for that matter).

Normally, when a patron gambles on the Casino floor - at the slots or at a gaming table - cocktails, soft drinks, water, even beer - are on the house.

The "lubricating" drinks are not only geared to elevate a guest into a happy-go-lucky mood - but also - offered up with the hope that the gambler may be more inclined to part with a bit of cash in favor of the cashier's gate, too.

Just try to secure a drinkie-pooh from a tired old cocktail waitress if it appears you are not a whale about to drop a truckload of cash at the tables - or at a minimum - fritter away a fistful of bucks on the one-armed bandit scattered about the dazzling premises.

In view of the foregoing, I have a tipping structure that I follow - whenever I zip into my favorite Casino - to plug a handful of coins into the inviting 3-D slots strategically-placed about the floor of the Hotel environs.

If the waitress delivers up a lone beer - or a glass of quality white wine - I usually tip a buck (provided I haven't been forced to wait a half-an-hour-or-so to quench my thirst once I have stepped inside the establishment to take a respite from the sizzling-hot afternoon desert sun).

If I ordered an exotic cocktail, the stages get higher, and I generally toss at least two dollar bills on the tray (with a smile and a thank you very much).

But, when it comes to soft drinks or regular water, I usually pass on a tip for good reason.

For example, if I sit at the slots for a couple of hours - and consume four or five cokes - I'll end up frittering away a fiver at least.

In these tough economic times?

No way, Jose!

Especially if the handful of sodas (?) consist mostly of packed ice, water, and a dollop of syrup.

Yup!

What they offer up at Bellagio (and elsewhere on the glitzy Vegas strip)  is not even real coke, folks!

Judging by the response I get from a large percentage of the waitresses on duty, my tip structure is acceptable, because it is reasonable and practical (bottom line).

In fact, more often-than-not, a server is inclined to respond to my take on tipping in a respectful manner.

"If you need anything else, just wave me down," they usually stress with sincerity in their voice.

So, you can imagine how surprised I was yesterday afternoon when an uncouth waitress proceeded to linger at my side (after she plunked the coke down) in a diabolical bold-faced effort to intimidate - and ultimately - coerce some moolah out of me.

Sheesh!

What gall.

As a rule, a well-brought-up waitress -with a modicum of good manners - usually cruises up, slips soda down, then drifts off in the event coin of the realm is not offered up.

No big deal for someone with class!
In contrast, the shocking behaviour of the hag at the Bellagio - was not only inappropriate - but underscored poor breeding and a total lack of etiquette.

Amen!

Josh Groban...mediocre PBS special disappointing! Pop Diva's standards hold up!

On the weekend I was channel-surfing when I stumbled upon a Josh Groban special marking a PBS 10th Anniversary broadcasting live! in Las Vegas.

At first blush, it was obvious the concert was a sly (deceitful) effort by Groban's handlers to stir up the passions of the pop vocalist's die-hard fans - and ultimately - jazz up his sagging image on the concert circuit around the country.

For instance, the editors weaved together a fast-paced montage of short clips geared towards seducing the viewing audience.

In a nutshell, the slick images were intended to manipulate and jolt the emotions - and pull at the heart strings - in the final analysis.

As a result, music-lovers - and fans alike - were unable to discern what had just washed over them.

Oh yes, there were shots of Groban - moaning mournfully, reaching out to the audience tenderly, wiggling a little butt - you name it.

Josh solos on drums!

Josh tickles the ivories!

Shameless.

Granted, when Mr. Groban warbled signature tunes such as - "You Raise me Up" - he was right on the "money".

His strong masculine voice appeals, after all.

In contrast, when he took a musical risk with original interpretations of established standards, the outcome was usually an abysmal failure.

When he crooned in Spanish, it was laughable, too.

At one point, Groban appeared for all-the-world like a nice little Jewish kid, dressed-up and at-the-ready to attend a Bar Mitzvah.

But somehow - by a quirk of fate - the warbler managed to end up on a concert stage instead (stripped bare and naked to the world).

In a prior critique last year, I opined that Josh Groban lacked the "presence" and "stature" to hold his own in such a setting with world-class musicians at his beck-and-call.

To his credit, this time out, Josh surrounded himself (in a few entertaining segments) with a handful of his contemporaries that succeeded in boot-strapping him up.

But clearly, as a solo "concert" act, he sucks!

Pet Alert...crack the windows open! Desert heat deadly!

Folks were up-in-arms bright-and-early this morning when they spied a small terrier locked inside a SUV with all the windows closed tight as-a-drum!

Because the driver parked in the shade outside a retail outlet, I expect they imagined that there was no need to crack the windows a tad to ensure their lovable pup was able to breath safely inside while they were off doing errands.

Wrong!

Even out of direct sunlight, the interior of a vehicle may quickly soar to unbearable deadly temperatures.

Get smart, animal owners!

Otherise, concerned citizens may be petitioning to have those family pets turned over to individuals who are capable (and intelligent enough) to properly care for a pet.

Amen!

Sahara Hotel...nostalgia buffs brave sweltering heat to snatch up keep-sakes!

If you were cruising down the Vegas strip on Thursday, you probably caught sight of a throng of tourists and locals alike, perspiring profusely in the sweltering heat in a line that snaked down the street for blocks on end.

Nope!

The folks were not anxious to snap up tickets for an upcoming headlining act.

On the contrary, die-hard souvenir-seekers were waiting patiently - sometimes upwards of three grueling hours - to gain entrance to a liquidation sale held at the Sahara Hotel which I reported on a couple of days ago.

http://ijulian.blogspot.com/2011/06/sahara-hotelnostalgia-sale-everything.html

As I noted in my previous report, the Sahara closed its doors to the public in May and is now in the process of clearing out the inventory - in some cases - at rock-bottom prices.

And, nostalgia buffs - a few practical types, too - are out to snap up a few collectibles if only for old time's sake.

After all, the Sahara Hotel was once a former haunt of the infamous "rat pack".

Uh-huh!

Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin - and a gang of swinging wannabees - once flocked to the glittering showcase in the heyday of Vegas when the "mob" ruled.

On Thursday, potential buyers paid $10.00 a pop

Within hours, beaming shoppers were later spied hauling out their spoils, with a smug look of satisfaction on their beaming faces tanned to perfection by the desert sun.

What was up for grabs?

Novel Camel Lamps - which once rested on night-stands in every suite in the once-chic Hotel - sold briskly 150 smackeroos.

Publicity stills of - Dean Martin, Elvis Presley, and the Beatles - were snapped up quickly, too.

"Even if the item is nailed down, it's for sale," one liquidator presiding over the event underscored in the event there were any doubts.

Meanwhile, items that could be dropped in a pocket or slipped into a take-home bag, were flying out of the Hotel left, right, and center.

For instance, lone poker chips were plucked up for two bucks, while single dinner plates were being wrapped up for five dollars a piece.

A King-size mattress - free of bed bugs, I hope - sold for $325.00.

The purchaser must have had a struggle wrestling that find out the front door, eh?

At press time, still dozens of little treasures were available on site, this week.

By the way, the liquidators have noted that there they will no longer be charging a fee into the fifth day of the sale, so budget-minded folks may want to bear that fact in mind.

The gargantuan sale continues for the next sixty days - when it is expected - that all the desirable primo items will have finally been snatched up and carried off to the four corners of the world.

Happy treasure hunting, eh?

38th Annual Daytime Emmys...Ho Hum telecast! Bold & Beautiful Best Soap! Ellen gets talk-show nod!

Fans of daytime TV coughed up $525.00 a ticket to mix-and-mingle with celebrated guests, B-list actors beamed on the red carpet, and Network Brass nervously stood on the sidelines waiting for the winners to be announced.

Although the 38th Annual Emmy Awards Show was tossed in an exotic locale in the desert oasis at the tony Hilton Hotel, they didn't really take advantage of it.

In sum, the broadcast was pretty pedestrian with few jolts or surprises.

No wonder!

After all, the daytime bill-of-fare on the old boob tube - endless talk, soap operas, and a multitude of mindless game shows - represent the "industry" side of the business.

A posse of workers routinley rise at the crack-of-dawn., head to the studio around six or seven as the sun is rising in the east, then - turn-out a few taped shows like clock-work - before they head home for dinner during the family hour.

Notwithstanding, a current transformation in the entertainment business has resulted in the cancellation of a handful of shows (long-running once-popular soaps, Oprah Winfrey, you name it), which has forced the suits to re-evaluate the tastes (and habits) of the American viewing audience.

Ronn Moss (an actor who plays "Ridge" on the Bold & Beautiful) theorized that one day the sizzling daytime pot-boilers (with plot lines that move along at a snail's pace) will be broadcast on the Internet.

Something tells me that sophisticated web-surfers (who populate the blogosphere) may not be interested in the fluff that the major networks are inclined to offer up though.

By the way, the "Bold & Beautiful" got the nod for the "Best Soap".

Grrrrr!

Years ago, when the serial first started up, I appeared on the show in a cameo role.

Of all the soaps I ever worked on (General Hospital, Young & Restless, Days of Our Lives) the cast of B &

Mr. Moss had a big ego (and acted like he owned the show) while Susan Flannery had the tendency to throw her weight around which was (and still is!) considerable.

By the way, the industry was inclined to sing the praises of Pat Sajak and Alex Trebek (two game-show hosts who have survived the axe over the years) and honor both with Lifetime Achievement Awards.

Deserving!

Of course, there was a loving tribute to Big "O" (Oprah Winfrey) on the heels of her departure from daytime Network TV.

In fact, the organizers of the event conjured up a spanking-new award-category to specially honor her.

The presenters gushed - so much so - that it ended up being way over-the-top.

Gladys Knight's parting song to Oprah was a disaster, too.

I didn't think it was possible for the legendary DIVA to bomb, but she did last night.

On occasion, Knight warbled off-key, gasped for breath, and strained to hit the high notes (which she missed more-often-than-not).

In contrast, Celine Dion sang one of Oprah's favorite hits beautifully.

At one point, when Susan Lucci sauntered up onto the stage, the host was inclined to take pokes at her character Erika Kane.

"You know, Erika was actually married eleven times, not eight," he joked.

"In fact, she played both sides of the fence," he quipped - at which point - a clip of Erika Kane marching down the aisle with Ellen DeGeneres sprang to life on the screen.

The audience roared.

By the way, the Ellen DeGeneres show won in the best talk show category this year.

Congrats, Ellen!

Unfortunately, Wayne Brady (a game-show host locally) failed to make the grade in his capacity as Master of Ceremonies.

Well, I'll put it this way.

Brady is no Neil Patrick Harris!

'Til next year!

Las Vegas...stench in front of Luxor causes tourists to gag! Curse of the Pharaohs?

Foul stench a curse of the Pharaohs?

Whew!

What a stench that was wafting around the Luxor Hotel on Las Vegas Boulevard last evening!

Shortly after I cashed out at the Casino, and stepped out of the beautifully-crafted Pyramid, I just about gagged when a vile odor (spoiled sewage?) assailed my nostrils.

Pedestrians all around me - not only grabbed up hankies to cover their faces - but let out little screams as they  dashed into the closest Hotel to avoid the foul fumes.

Does Las Vegas have a problem with its basic plumbing?

Get the engineers on that right away, Mayor Goodman, or folks will be filing lawsuits over their upset tummies and heaving.

Pet Peeves...Las Vegas card "snappers" flash porno in tourist's faces! Fines for littering, please!

If you have ever taken a stroll along the Vegas strip on a balmy night - between Flamingo and Tropicana - you have probably been "assaulted" by a bevy of pornographic images of half-naked women which Mexican day-workers try to thrust into your face every few seconds.

Uh-huh!

The "snappers" (when they try to foist a filthy smut shot in your direction they twist the card so it makes a cracking sound) not only jump in and totally invade your space" on the street - but literally try to force a business card (promoting the porno industry's live nude shows and call girls for hire) into your sweaty little palm.

On one annoying occasion, a Latino woman stuck a handful of the nasty adverts into my armpit as I strolled by, after I attempted to shoe her away.

My pet peeve?

Tourists (and locals alike) should be able to casually stroll down the street without being forced to take a glance at these sleazy scantily-clad women on the face of the calling cards!

If that weren't bad enough, it should also be noted - that a larger proportion of the smutty ads - end up splattered all over the sidewalks!

Imagine that!

Young tots - whose eye lines tend to be closer to the pavement than their parents in tow - are treated to an avalanche of nasty erotic publicity stills of bare boobs and peek-a-boo crotches.

A shocker, if 'ya ask me.

Personally, I think it is high time that law enforcement (or security on the strip) kept a watchful eye on these vendors to ensure that they cease and desist with the reprehensible conduct which spoils a pleasant night out-on-the-town in the desert resort.

In addition, the card sharks should be forced to rid the streets of their smut by the end of the evening.

Or, face "stiff" fines for littering.

Amen!

Anthony Weiner...Hustler's Larry Flint offers up meaty contract! Doggie-style, solo, or Missionary style!

On Friday afternoon (at the height of the Anthony Weiner scandal) frenzied shutterbugs fell all over themselves outside of the Congressman's (former) office in the 9th Circuit in NYC (a couple fell on their asses and ended up in prickly bushes licking a wound or two) in a bold-faced effort to snap a "money" shot as the beleaguered politician attempted to make a quick escape to his quiet home in Queens (!).

Meanwhile, smut King - Larry Flint - mused over the scandal on the sidelines.

I imagine he was rubbing his lecherous hands with glee!

Before you could say "Drop your drawers", the head honcho at Hustler Magazine - who faced one major skirmish on the issue of obscenity in the Supreme Court (and won!) a scant few years ago - the sly devil was making a bid for Anthony Weiner's "package" (without the wrapping, of course!).

Although the pundits are predicting that Weiner is all washed up - it appears that the horndog may have a career opportunity blossoming on the horizon (more to his erotic tastes) in the porno industry.

Uh-huh!

Would you spring ten bucks to catch Weiner doing it doggie-style?

How about a sizzling hot tryst on-camera featuring Ryan Reynolds and the naughty politician jerking off to Spanish Soap Operas?

Ryan Reynolds

Of course, there will be a reality show, a line of sexy (package flattering) tightie-whities, and - well, the sky is the limit - isn't it?

Who knows, he may end up on the sex channel in local Motel rooms around the country.

Only in America, eh?

Canucks...riots in mellow "pothead" town of Vancouver a shocker! Peace & Love, dude!

Having resided in Vancouver (B.C.) for approximately ten years during my rebellious hippie youth, I was quite shocked when the news footage of riots in the picturesque respite by the sea flooded the airwaves on nightly-news shows this past week.

As comic Jay Mohr noted last night on a talk-show, Vancouver has always been "home" to a multitude of peace-loving anti-war potheads.

So, what gives?

What elements have crept into the fabric of society on the normally gentle Pacific Northwest Coast to trigger such an alarming violent reaction to a loss at a mere sports match?

I have always been proud of the fact "us" Canadians tend to be neutral, cool-headed, and all-round good sportsmen when it gets down to the nitty-gritty.

I expect that pundits North of the border - in the wake of the tragic turn-of-events - are blaming American influences from south of the border, shadowy foreign upstarts with ulterior motives lurking in the shadows, whatever.

If what happened this past week is a sign of what Canada is all about these days, for sure, I prefer to reside in the United States.

Even if I do miss the strong Canadian beer!

American brews suck, after all!

Garth Brooks...inducted into Hall of Fame! Gigs at Wynn Resort! June 23rd - June 25th!

On Thursday, Country & Western superstar Garth Brooks was inducted into the 42nd Songwriters "Hall of Fame" by his peers.

Brooks delighted guests when he took the stage with Billy Joel at the chi-chi awards ceremony in NYC (both were clad in chic black cowboy ensembles) and performed a vastly entertaining duet which featured the hit tune "Shameless".

Gracious Brooks was quick to turn the spotlight on Billy Joel, though, which underscored just how humble the celebrated cowpoke can be.

"Billy Joel is one of the greatest songwriters of all time," Brooks gushed in so many words, as the rapt audience gazed on from below the footlights.

The fact that Joel took a day out of his life to saunter onto the stage with Brooks made the C&W performer feel "lucky".

Fans will be, too, in the event they managed to snap up tickets for the Brooks gig about to kick-off at the Wynn Resort later this week.

When Steve Wynn first signed Garth Brooks to the upcoming stint on the strip the show-biz news made headlines around the country.

The lucrative deal left Brooks "sitting pretty" with a host of spoils that lesser-knowns could only pray and fantasize about ever achieving.

For example, a fleet of stretch "Rolls Royce" limousines purring at the curb 24/7 - and luxury jets at-the-ready to take flight on a whim at the drop-of-a-cowboy-hat - are nothing to sniff at.

How do I hop aboard, Mr. Wynn?

By the way, break a leg, eh Garth?

Great Vegas Festival of Beer...at Tivoli Village! Father's Day chug-a-lug treat!

Some folks have found a unique way to celebrate "Father's Day" with good ole Dad as the temperatures soar into the three digits today in the desert oasis.

Families are packing up the SUV and heading to the Great Vegas Festival of Beer in Tivoli Village to chug-a-lug a tasty ale or two.

The "Fest" is the first of its kind in the area and is sponsored by local duo Motley Brews.

Tourists and locals alike will have a golden thirst-quenching opportunity to sample about 100 beers from top breweries.

Vendors will be offering up scrumptious snacks, too.

Kava Kreation will also perform island-inspired music.

The beer extravaganza runs from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. tonight.

Your patronage, by the way, will help raise funds for Boys and Girls Clubs in the vicinity.

See 'ya there!

Ryan Reynolds...masturbates to Spanish Soap Operas! Prefers 6 pack of beer, eh?

On the show-biz circuit to promote the "Green Lantern" (released around the country at a theatre near you this week) Ryan Reynolds (sexy flavor of the month) fessed up that he was suspended from a high school in Vancouver (B.C.) for being a naughty cut-up when he was a pimply-faced teen.

But, the penalty - according to the buffed hunk (who sauntered out from behind the curtain in an elegant cream-colored suit teamed with a tasteful chic tie on one top-rated talk-show) - was a plus.

"That's punishment? Staying home from school?" he chuckled to the host, in so many words.

"I just laid back on my bed all day and masturbated to Spanish soap operas!"

Uh-huh!

Those Latino hunks are sure to cause a rise in the old Levis - if that's your cup-of-tea - that is.

Maybe Ryan should hook up with Ricky Martin next time they cross paths on the red carpet, eh?

By the way, Mr. Reynolds appears to have "butched-up" his act a smidgen since the last time I caught one of his insightful (!) interviews on the telly.

Somehow, the outgoing performer came across as less "gay" than he usually does.

His cut muscled bod doesn't hurt his image, for starters.

But, according to the charismatic actor - who triggers whoops and hollers from fans (both female & male) whenever he makes a public appearance (and in movie theatres when he pops up on screen) - he's ready to heave whenever a reporter quizzes him about his awesome abs.

Now that the action-adventure film is in the can and screening around the Nation - and the strenuous work-outs are behind him - the handsome thespian underscores that he pines to loll about on the couch and chug-a-lug about ten beers.

"I'm Canadian, after all," he shrugs, without apology.

Yup!

Us Canucks can party-hearty, alright.

And, kick some butt, when the local hockey team loses big time in a sports match.

By the way, I intend to catch the "Green Lantern" over the weekend (and will post a review in the next few days).

'Til then!

http://www.thetattler.biz

Anthony Weiner...resigns post! The "package" wrapper was his un-doing!

A man's tie says it all subliminally!

Yesterday afternoon, Anthony Weiner stood at the podium at a noisy press conference (where angry upstarts in the unruly gallery below the floodlights shouted out obscenities at the beleaugered politician caught with his pants down) and informed frenzied members of the press that he was resigning his post as Congressman for the 9th District of New York.

A cheer when up in the crowd!

At this juncture, though, a sad "sick" chapter of Weiner's professional and personal life came to a sorry close on a sour note.

In spite of that moment of closure, folks are still shaking their heads in total disbelief, today.

Did the high-profile Government official actually thinkFacebook) without getting his dick caught in the wringer?

As one pundit astutely notely:

"Weiner had a death wish, obviously."

Of course, there were other glaring missteps which hastened his shocking demise.

Fashionistas have been babbling about the obvious for days!

For example, in one of the e-mails that was offered up at a News Conference to establish evidence of Weiner's wrongdoing, it was pointed out that the horndog actually lamented to one gal pal that his "package" wasn't getting the respect that it deserved.

Well, if that was the case, it was Weiner's own fault from the very get-go!

I dare say.

After all, those dreary grey boxers Weiner donned for his first incident of sexual hijinks were - not only an  unsightly eyesore in respect to style - but also sadly lacking in the tightie-whities erotica department as well (especially when it comes to the oh-so-touchy art of sexual foreplay).

For starters, any underwear that "flattens out" the "junk" - or rides-up unflatteringly at the crotch is a definite no-no.

In a nutshell?

Weiner should have modelled a few sexy underthings first in front of a full-length mirror (rehearsed a few sexy poses, too) before snapping and zipping off those pedestrian publicity stills which left a lot to be desired in respect to arousal potential.

With that in mind, here's a selection of sexy underthings sure to "blow" their load next, time!

Let me know how 'ya make out Anthony, eh?

And, the trend continues over the weekend, go figure!
