Scandals...of the Privileged Few! A Novel by Julian Ayrs! Chapter 9!

The bells at the Abbey began to peal, the quaint horse-drawn carriage crept forward along the cobblestone walk, and the Royal couple beamed with joy.

Whenever Prince Constantine and Her Highness Angelie Hightower half-turned in their plush upholstered seats – and glanced at each other adoringly – it was crystal clear to all who gazed on.

The Royal newlyweds were very much in love!

The elegant ceremony was hailed as Europe’s wedding of the century in spite of the fact the quaint Principality was tucked away in a secluded breathtaking climb in the Swiss Alps.

It was such an emotional romantic moment - that even jaded Queen Regina’s violet eyes welled up – when her grandson slipped the dazzling 79 carat Krupp diamond on Angelie's finely-manicured finger.

Meanwhile, across the big pond, Jill kicked off her heels and lounged comfortably in a designer ball gown as her ruby, emerald, and diamond-encrusted tiara caught the light and cast an exquisite spray of magical rainbows this way ‘n that.

Alongside a dozen-or-so well-heeled female co-workers, the Scandinavian beauty tossed back a couple of exotic cocktails – as her boisterous male counterparts downed brewskies in low-key jammies etched with teddy-bears, terry-cloth bath-robes, and medieval-looking gold-pronged crowns.

Royal watchers plunked down $50 a head to party-hearty at the trendy “Cat & the Fiddle” on Sunset Boulevard and toast Prince Constantine and Her Highness Princess Angelie in front of a handful of state-of-the-art widescreen televisions strategically-placed around the popular nightclub.

There was a surreal quality to the electrically-charged festivities.
The National flag fluttered in a subtle night breeze, palm trees swayed, and an upbeat rendition of “Putting on the Ritz” charmed romantics.

Whenever the Queen’s grandson raised his gloved hand – and waved it – there was a child-like quality about the quirky gesture that triggered a number of knee-jerk reactions.

“OMG,” one secretary with goo-goo eyes for the Prince giggled in an aside to her best pal.

“He waves his manly hand like a five-year old.”

Pockets of laughter erupted around the packed hotspot as word spread about the spastic gesture unnoticed ‘til now at the witching hour.

Subsequently, every time Prince Constantine rose to the occasion, all eyes stared intently in his direction as tipsy barflies waited for the hilarious jarring moment to arrive.

“There it is,” one handsome taxi driver squealed ecstatically, as a gloved hand fell into position like clock-work.

“The Prince has no clothes,” one waiter hollered in jest at this juncture as he dashed into the kitchen.

Gales of laughter drowned out the ABC TV announcer’s voice as he attempted to proceed with a colorful blow-by-blow account of the fairy tale celebrations unfolding on International News Wires around the face of the globe.

“Oh, stop,” one plump off-duty Nurse scolded her friends.

“He looks so cute,” a tourist from Hoboken exclaimed just before she scooped up a mouthful of delicious finger food being catered by the quick on-their-toes staff

Although the goofy wave continued to trigger laughter throughout the ceremony for the rest of the evening, everyone was pretty much in accord with regard to “the kiss”.

In fact, Constantine got a huge thumbs-up in the department.

“That smooch was genuine,” one middle-aged out-of-towner excitedly chimed in, as she adjusted her “do” in a compact mirror.

“The expression on their faces said it all,” she summed up to her best friend who was quick on-the-uptake.

“They’re so in love!”

Then, the scuttlebutt revved up.

The general consensus?

Compared to Tom Cruise’s kiss many moons ago, it was a passionate peck that scored high on the Richter scale.

“What a joke. It was obvious to any fool that the top gun’s heart wasn’t in it,” one reporter circulating the garden patio chuckled to all within earshot.

“Cruise is in love with himself, anyway” one jock quipped, as he stepped up to the bar to take his turn at a rowdy game of darts.

As the newsie reached for a brewski, the competitor became fierce.

“Chug-a-lug,” his pals taunted enthusiastically.

“And, L. Ron Hubbard,” a shapely server kidded with disdain as she waltzed by with a tray of empties.

“Look at all those dead soldiers,” Jill – who was now two sheets-to-the-wind and feeling no pain –chuckled.

“Michael Jackson’s suck-face moment on his night of wedded bliss was the absolute worst,” cringed another.

“Lisa Marie was obviously a beard mates,” one regular admonished her from a perch at the end of the packed bar.

“Talk about awkward and forced,” shrieked another at a table nearby which was graced with a mouth-watering fancy-tiered cake whipped up to mirror the tasty one about to be wolfed down at the blow-out reception at Nottingham Palace momentarily.

A roar went up in the “Cat & the Fiddle” when Princess Beatrice alighted from a purring limo.

A wild outrageous hat plunked down on the crest of her pretty head cried out “Fashion Victim”.

No redeeming qualities, no Sir!

In contrast – when the Bride’s sister (Frances Hightower) took a short trek on the red carpet with dainty bridesmaids and handsome male pages in tow – her grand entrance on the World Stage was hailed as a stylish fashion breakthrough!

It did not escape the eagle eye of at least one Royal observer - that whenever Frances was within blushing distance of handsome Prince Harry - she invariably turned a crimson red.

Gossips hinted that the two high-profile Royals were in the throes of a torrid affair.

One reporter from “News of the World” swore up-and-down that after he greased a palm or two, that all the salacious details came tumbling out, at the Bristol Downs Hotel & Carriage Resort on a silver platter.

“A maid walked in unexpectedly one day and caught sight of the young beauty primping in front of a full-length mirror in skimpy silk panties and a sexy see-through push-up lace bra courtesy of Victoria Beckham.

Was it just a coincidence that the Hotel suite flanked randy Prince Harry’s?

English commoners down on the upper crust jet-set seized on the brouhaha surrounding Princess Beatrice’s gaudy hat and the ensuing scandal to trounce the Queen Mother and the Royals in general.

For example, a posse of angry anti-royalists sporting t-shirts etched with nasty disparaging slogans, turned-out in full force in Golden Eagle Square to voice their whole-hearted disapproval.

“Off with their heads!”

An organized band of protesters – bent on barring Royals from remaining seated on the throne in the future without a majority vote at the polls –shouted out their criticisms in plain public view on the carriage route in the form of a hasty note not easily missed.

“To Constantine and Angelie”

“While we wish you every happiness in married life, we oppose your right to inherit public office and will do all we can to ensure that the Queen’s successor is chosen by the British people.”

The anti-royalist sentiment appeared to be growing in the disgruntled ranks.

Although only two-thousand actually protested in the streets on the otherwise festive Wedding Day – snarling upstarts asserted that they were actually twenty percent of the voting populace behind-the-scenes if the truth be known.

Authorities, on the heels of the assassination of terrorist leader Osama bin Laden, did not take the protests lightly, that’s for sure.

The leaders of the gang were also inclined to note that they had a soft spot for Prince Constantine on the other hand.

“I think he’s a man of the people. I’m sure he’d rather be somewhere else, doing something else.”

Even still, an organized gang of anti-Royalists objected to the lavish Wedding ceremony-– replete with a lot of pomp and circumstance - and paid for from the public coffers.

“It was an enormous waste of public funds for people who haven’t been elected,” activist Rachel Schwartz Holford underscored to activists in the streets.

Meanwhile, others took credit for an attack on Prince Neville’s motorcade in recent days, to underscore how simple it was to disrupt busy city streets at the drop of a hat.

The political activists acknowledged pelting Prince Neville’s Royal Limousine with eggs - and defacing the Royal Mansion - to illustrate their point.

Dozens of English subjects - who actively participated in the staging of the angry protests – were subsequently rounded up and charged with a conspiracy to overthrow the Monarchy.

“Prince Neville is a crusty elitist who wiles away the hours trying to drum up new-fangled inventions to transform the Monarchy," one critic complained.

"The Prince is intrigued by transporters for instance (similar to those first-introduced on the Star Trek TV series) and has openly mused about developing one to facilitate on State occasions to save Taxpayers funds (normally wasted on airfare, Hotel accommodation, pricey security details to protect the Prince, and what-have-you).

Constantine’s father is a die-hard environmentalist, after all.

At the Royal Wedding, guests speculated that an aisle of soaring Maple Trees commanding attention in Westminster Abbey was one inspired by Prince Neville who trots the globe participating in green conferences far-and-wide.

No, Sir!

Allegedly, the surprise decorative splash of greenery was the brain child of the newlyweds.

Some old-fashioned sticks-in-the-Royal-mud snickered about Princess Angeli's thoroughly modern approach in that regard.

For instance, Her Royal Highness' (a title bestowed on her by the aging Monarch) decision not to utter up a promise to “obey” her groom sent shockwaves through the horsey set who hissed their disapproval behind-her-back.

Because Angelie is not fair in skin tone – Royal diviners peering into their mysterious crystal balls - have crowned Princess Angeli the Queen of Clubs in their tarot forecasts.

Lady Marquis de Sorbonne – a clairvoyant known to have predicted the death of Lady Diana – seemed to think there may be a loaf in the oven right now.
“I see twins for the happy couple. But, one child may be switched at birth by mistake. Like Prince Harry, there may be doubts about birthright when the child blossoms into a remarkable whiz kid with looks unusual to the Royals.”

The aging psychic predicted in her daily column that a deranged young woman may have a fixation on the Prince which ends tragically.

Meanwhile, Jill was not surprised to learn that in a recent poll, Prince Constantine’s father was not favored to ascend the Royal throne.

Every since his father’s affair in the eighties, which some allege was responsible for the death of Constantine's mother in a icar crash on the Riviera; Royal watchers have been down on Prince Neville’s rise ro power.

The holding tank was smelly and cramped.

Funny that!

It’s easy to take the basic privileges in life for granted.

Like taking a simple piss, for instance.

At the Hollywood Police Department, where Brad waited to be transferred downtown to a facility the other inmates referred to as Twin Towers, it was evident that the asshole Deputies didn’t give two shits about the inmates or their precious right to privacy.

“Those bastards,” Brad whispered to one of the few sane white Dudes who had staked out a claim on the filthy floor to his left.

“A perverse thrill must course their veins whenever they spy a couple of the inmates at each other’s throats in a deadly fight over a scrap of stale bread,” Brad grumbled.

“Boy, your instincts are right on the money,” a sorry sliver of a man shot back.

“Two of the Sheriffs in the County jail head-up one of the worst street gangs in the city. So, watch your back,” a loser the other inmates referred to as "mouse" warned as he scraped a speck of shit off his worn sneaker.

“Flunkies,” hissed one biker-type with an obvious axe to grind.

“Most of ‘em have all the intelligence of a worm. They couldn’t cut it as cops, so they signed on for the Sheriff’s Department," another noted in disgust.

The first day they stride through the door to report for duty, the young bucks are all gung ho, ramrod straight, and ready to play fair-and-square by-the-book.

Within a year or so, though, they’re twisting arms for kickbacks, hitting on the inmates, and stuffing their fat yaps.

“Just try to come in-between those bozos and their grub when they're chowing down," another joked.

“Takes a lot of intelligence, alright, to walk an inmate from his cell, to the jailhouse for a court hearing, and back again,” another scoffed sarcastically.

“They’re so dumb, the Department was forced to paint lines on the floor, so they wouldn’t get lost along the way!. Go figure!”

“It’s what my Dad would call a grunt job.”

A pretty cynical lot, his fellow cellmates, Brad mused to himself.

“When they coined the phrase – “he thinks his shit don’t smell” – they had the Los Angeles County Sheriffs in mind."

“That reminds me,” one scruffy day-worker muttered under his breath, as he staggered to his feet, in a bit of a stupor.

“Guard," he cried out.

“Heh, stop that fucking nonsense” a seasoned inmate scolded from his perch.

“You’ll have those assholes pounding on all of us if you don’t shut-the-fuck up.”

“We’re outta toilet tissue, dude,” he shouted back angrily.

“You’re gonna have your knuckles rapped with a night stick, if ‘ya keep annoying the desk clerk," he growled back.

"Use a piece of newspaper jerk-off!"

In the final analysis, all the posturing was just a lot of empty bravado, alright.

Most of these assholes were all talk and no action.

Black prisoners were particularly good at that.

Paper Tigers!

“When push came to shove, they take it up the ass,” one cynical thief in for grand-theft-auto smirked.

Brad was getting pretty restless at this point and tried to maneuver his cold aching body into a more comfortable position.

“What’s it like downtown at that other facility,” Brad innocently quizzed one dude half-asleep next to the cell door.

“Facility? Boy, does this dude have delusions of grandeur,” a heavyset street tough spat out in his direction.

“I suppose Mommy’s going to come down and bail ‘ya out, eh?”

Brad was about to take a poke back when the inmate next to him grabbed his arm.

“Let it go, Dude. Once you get a rep for being a trouble-maker, things will go bad for ‘ya.”

In response the asshole gave Brad the finger to egg him on.

“It’s a hell-hole in County, buddy,” the soft-spoken dude calmly pointed out on the heels of the tiff.

“Say, you a fag??”

Brad did a double-take.

Just as he was about to respond, the kid explained the overture.

“No, I’m not coming on to ‘ya. If you’re gay, a fag – whatever they call homos these days – you can ask to be housed in K-12. That's where all the homosexuals are held until arraignment, sentencing, and what-have-you."

K-12, get it dude"

"In the eyes of the cops, homos are lower than dogs. They're K-9!"

“Well,” Brad hesitated.

"I'm kind-of bisexual,” he whispered.

“You know what I say about bisexuals," his new found pal quizzed.

“They’re trying to get in on everything. Or, trying to get a-hold of anything they can,” he chuckled, as a couple of the other dudes gave a knowing look back.

“It gets lonely in jail, if ‘ya get my drift, Buddy.”

Brad grinned.

This guy was cool.

Brad extended his hand to introduce himself.

“Brad. What’s your name?”

"Dusty,” he responded back in a lower register.

“So, what gives with K-12?

A couple of the repeat inmates chuckled when they saw Brad perk up over the K-12 scuttlebutt.

“I’d rather camp out in the hole than be housed in K-12,” one sniped.

“I don’t want no fag jumping my bones in the middle of the night when I’m asleep.”

As Gertrude Stein would say:

“A blow job is a blow job is a blow job,” Brad cackled back.

“All kidding aside, that’s why it’s necessary to have separate housing for gays. There is so much ignorance and hatred towards homosexuals in the jails,” Dusty was quick to point out.

Notwithstanding, most guys were hip to the fact that inmates in K-12 were treated better than regular prisoners housed at the Twin Towers facility.

There were two beds to a cell, the food was better, and there were recreational programs to wile away the hours.

But,getting accepted into K-12 required a bit of the old soft-shoe.

Uh-huh.

Inmates were required to establish that they were gay or bisexual by answering a quick question or two.

For example, the Sheriff in charge of K-12 had a list of questions designed to ferret out the fakers.

Ironic that, eh?

Usually, gays hide in the closet to keep their sexuality secret.

At k-12, they were anxious to openly disclose their sexual orientation.

For example, an inmate may be asked who Harvey Milk was.

Or, to name a popular Gay Magazine read in the gay community.

Questions may be about political events such as Stonewall.

Or, be of a sexual nature.

What is a 69?

As the conversation dragged on into the wee hours of the morning, it was pretty obvious that the prisoners ran the gamut from down-and-out drunks, to petty thieves, and even a hardened criminal-or-two about to run out of luck on the third strike.

The experience was a sobering one.

“Don’t let this get ‘ya down, Dude,” one likeable twenty-something drug dealer tried to console Brad.

“Van Nuys is the armpit of the world.”

‘Beverly Hills is the best,” chirped another.

“I shouldn’t even be a guest in this 5-star establishment,” one nerd moaned.

“I didn’t do it.”

A groan went through the cell.

Then, a handful of the cellmates cried out in unison, as if on cue.

“I’m innocent!!”

“Every inmate claims that,” one snotty creep sniffed in the corner.

Suddenly, Brad heard a few footsteps outside the holding area – at which point – keys jangled loudly and one turned in the lock of the door.

Had Melanie come through for Brad at this ungodly hour?

“Anthony Bellini,” a guard with rolls of fat hanging over his regulation belt shouted out from a clipboard with a list of names on it.

“See, I told ‘ya. I’m outta here,” a disheveled inmate cried out.

“Bellini?" the gruff Officer quizzed.

“I am, Sir.”

“There’s an outstanding warrant on file for grand theft. You’re being transferred. Pack up your things. I’ll be back in a few minutes to collect you.”

The rag-tag band of inmates started to hoot and holler spontaneously and raz the embarrassed dude.

“I’m not guilty,” one inmate mimicked him, as he rolled his eyes, and turned back over on his side to catch a few zzzz’s.

“Bullshit!”

Something told Brad it was going to be a cold lonely night.

Scandals...of the Privileged Few! A Novel by Julian Ayrs! Chapter 8!

Brad counted the crisp bills fresh out of the ATM, double-checked the total, and then handed over the wad of cash to the gruff heavily tattooed street urchin.

After taking a brief whiff of the pungent green stuff, he strode toward his 1975 Corvette Stingray purring at the curb, tucked the plastic baggie into a leather pouch, and proceeded to slip it into the side-pocket of his trendy Abercrombie & Fitch windbreaker.

Thwack!

Suddenly, out-of-the-blue, Brad was struck from behind, and found himself propelled face-forward into the cracked pavement below with a nasty thud.

“DEA,” he heard a man bark out.

“You’re under arrest for possession of marijuana,” were the last words he heard before he briefly lost consciousness.

Moments later - it seemed like an eternity - Brad found himself spitting out blood as two darkly-clad males roughly pulled his aching limp body up to a standing position next to what appeared-to-be an unmarked police car.

As Brad struggled to get his wits about him, one of the surly males snatched his wallet out of his back pocket and proceeded to thumb through it for ID, as another swiftly and expertly frisked his body.

“So, are you some kind of pot-head,” one of the undercover officers grilled Brad, as he shoved the baggie of grass he’d confiscated into his now-bloody face.

“Naw,” Brad started to reply, before he was interrupted.

"Or,  you’re a dealer. Eh, kid? Which is it,” he demanded.

“I – I – I use it for medicinal purposes” Brad blurted back, still shaken by the unexpected ordeal which had just gone down on the run down side street in Hollywood.

“Bull,” the younger-of –the-two shouted at him as he stood menacingly nearby.

A second cop raised his hand and gestured for his partner to back off a second.

At this juncture, he sidled up to Brad, and casually – but firmly – placed a hand on his shoulder.

“Who’s your contact, son? We’ll go light on ‘ya. If ‘ya cough up the info, that is,” the officer taking on the “good cop” role promised.

“Look, I want to talk to a lawyer,” Brad managed to mutter, without a crack in his voice.

“Oh, he’s guilty alright,” growled the obvious rookie of the two.

“When the little babies cry for “daddy or their attorney, you just know they’re not new to the ropes,” he hissed in disgust.

“Maybe we should go for a ride down to the warehouse district, eh tough guy,” he continued angrily.

Brad started to reel in shock.

All of a sudden he felt like he was in a bad Mickey Spillane movie, or something.

At this juncture, he clammed up.

“Ok, kiddo. Have it your way,” the second cop – still unidentified at this point in the shake-down – barked back at Brad.

In a few seconds flat, Brad was whirled around roughly and a cold pair of scuffed handcuffs was snapped on his wrists so tightly - that he not only flinched - but cried out in pain as well.

“Ouch,” he found himself yelping out loud as a few of the residents of the middle-class neighborhood snickered nearby in the shadows.

He overheard one hiss.

“Damn drug-dealers are poisoning our children. Rot in hell alongside Osama bin Laden”

Were they going to lynch him next?

Melanie was relaxing in a warm silky bath, savoring each glorious note of the classical music as it wafted from one poignant moment-to-the-next throughout the upper levels of their sumptuous home on Nob Hill, when the jarring sound of the telephone broke her moment of ecstasy unexpectedly out-of-the-blue.

Was the maid going to pick up?

Obviously, not.

As she dickered about whether to pick up or not, it hit her like a ton of bricks.

Suddenly, she recalled that she gave Eloise the night off to attend her son’s solo recital at the Masonic Temple in mid-Wilshire.

Now, she was in a dilemma.

Once she dashed across to pluck up the phone from its elegant cradle in the wall, the caller would probably hang up abruptly in frustration.

Should she or shouldn’t she bother making the trek across the cold floor inset with imported Italian marble.

There was something kind of persistent-sounding about the ring, though, she mused to herself.

Melanie’s husband was in Manhattan on business, as usual.

Maybe, there was an emergency and urgently trying to reach Melanie?

Oh, heck.

Melanie grabbed a fluffy pink towel with her monogram etched on its face from the gold encrusted rack nearby, wrapped it quickly around her upper torso, and then gingerly headed towards a small alcove in the far wall.

“Daisy’s flowers,” she chirped with a grin on her face, as she snatched the telephone up in one sudsy hand.

Inside joke!

“Oh, It’s some flower shop” a male voice could be heard informing a third party in the background,

“You may have jotted down the number incorrectly,” the crisp formal-sounding voice noted, before he was interrupted by the towel-clad socialite now dripping all over the normally-pristine bathroom floor.

“Sir?”

Just a sec,” the Police Officer at the Hollywood Police Station instructed Melanie, as he turned to inform Brad of the new developments.

“It may be a wrong number.”

He turned back to the task at hand, and tried to determine the name of the person on the end of the phone, which was now crackling with static.

“Is this Ms. Vanderbilt?”

“Yes. To whom am I speaking,” she asked, as it instantaneously dawned on her how formal and stuffy she must have sounded to the caller on the other end.

“This is Sergeant Montana at the Hollywood Precinct. A young man, who was booked in to the Station a short while ago, asked me to get in touch with you on his behalf, ” he stated matter-of-fact.

Melanie recoiled in horror for a moment.

There must be some mistake, she mumbled under her breath, as a swirl of unpleasant visual images floated through her waking consciousness pushing alarm buttons.\Then, she took a deep breath, and tried to compose herself.

“Sir, there must be a mistake. Who did you say he is trying to contact?”

“I didn’t Ma’am, “he politely responded as he searched for just the right words on his end.

“Miss, I’ll hand over the phone if that’s alright. The gentleman says his name is Brad. He knows you from a Matisse exhibit or something.”

That tidbit of information seemed to ring a bell with Melanie.

The socialite was still in a bit of a fog, and waited with bated breath for the mystery caller to speak into the receiver.

Bingo!

She suddenly realized who may be placing the late-night call.

The Sergeant put Brad on the line with little more adieus.

“Hello, Melanie?”

“Brad, what’s happened to you?” she asked in a calm reassuring voice.

Inside, she was emotionally-torn up, to put it mildly.

“I feel so badly having to contact you, Melanie. But, I am at a loss at what to do,” he started out, a bit hesitantly.

“Not a problem, at all, Brad. I was alone in the bathtub,” she assured him.

“Oh, so you remember me from the Matisse Exhibition about a month ago?”

“Of course. Our chat about Matisse’s subtle and overt influences on a handful of his contemporaries - was that it? - very enlightening.

“In fact, based on your research,” she continued, “I cajoled my husband into purchasing a lesser-known work,” she beamed to Brad proudly.

“If there is such a thing,” she giggled, at the thought.

“Wow! I’m envious,” Brad cooed.

“I want all the delicious details.”

“We’ll do lunch! Eugh, so Hollywood, I know,” she reacted violently to her own suggestion.

“But, how about you, Brad. As they say, what’s up?”

Unlucky at cards, unlucky at nights out on-the-prowl in Hollywood, I guess,” he kidded, to break the ice a little.

“You’re in Hollywood? When did you move from San Francisco,” she probed further.

“A friend of mine had an extra ticket to the premiere of Fast Five at the DGA - you know, the Paul Walker flick - which was part of the Opening Night Gala at the Asian Pacific Film Festival. After the movie, I got into a bit of trouble a few blocks down the street, in an undercover sting. But, it’s awkward just now. I can’t talk.”

“I understand. The Sergeant is listening, right?” she whispered in a lower register.

“Uh-huh.”

“Okay. I’ll ask questions from this end, and you say yes or no, okay?”

“Right,” Brad answered back cheerfully.

Gosh, Melanie was not only a great beauty, but quick on the uptake, too. Good thing he called her. Ted would have probably screwed up in his drug-induced state. The Police Department only allowed one phone call, so Ted was out-of-the-question, for obvious reasons.

“Is it something to do with a DUI or public drunkenness, “she probed further?

“No. Getting warm, though,” he joked half-heatedly, as he tried to suppress a chuckle.

“Dope?”

Well, nothing serious,” he responded cautiously, hoping the little game they were playing might rustle up the right information for her to act on.

After all, admitting the purchase of grass on a telephone – that may be tapped – was only a trap a dumb stoner would get snared by.

“Possession?” she asked in a lower register.

“Yes, I don’t know what possessed me,” he quipped, as he gave the Sergeant the once-over to determine if he had a clue about what was going down.

“Okay, I understand. Is there anyone you want me to try to reach?”

“No, if my dad finds out, he’ll cut me off. Say good-bye to Harvard!"

“Look, let me get in touch with my husband, Brad. He’ll know what to do. I’ll take care of it this end, so don’t worry. Watch your back, too, eh? I’ve head horror stories about the County Jail from Lindsay’s mother.”

“You bet. You’re a doll, Melanie,” Brad found himself elatedly blurting into the receiver of the phone before he handed it back to the cop standing patiently.

As Melanie strode towards the luxury environs of her comfy bedroom to snatch up her Armani silk housecoat, she sifted-and-sorted through the jumble of thoughts bouncing inside her pretty little head.

When the Sergeant came back on the line, Melanie had a special request.

“Sir, thank you for calling. Could you tell me what I need to do to have my friend released,” she politely inquired.

“Well Ma’am, from what I understand it is a first offense. Provided he is guilty of the charges, that is. So, the bail has been set within guidelines set by the court. If a bond is posted, and there aren’t any legal complications – no outstanding warrants or that sort-of-thing – he’ll be released right away.”

‘He’ll have to appear at an arraignment and enter a plea, of course. A lawyer will explain all the details more succinctly to you. I am not allowed to give legal advice.”

“Yes, of course, I understand. I was wondering, though, could you do me a favor?”

“Well, if I can,” he hesitated, expecting the worst.

“Shoot. How can I be of assistance?”

If I give you my fax number could you send me the name and address of your facility, what the criminal charges are, and the amount of bail that is due?”

“Well, it’s a bit irregular, Miss. But, I’ll make an exception this time. Maybe the young man just needs a break. I doubt that he’s a hardened criminal or anything like that, judging by the looks of him. Things just went awry for the kid, or he wasn’t thinking straight, tonight.”

“Thank you, sir. You’re a Godsend really,” Melanie sucked up sincerely from her end.

“Thanks Miss. That paperwork will be out to you in the next thirty minutes or so.”

“I’ll keep my eye out for it. And, you can expect a contribution to the Policeman’s Fund,” she teased.

“That’s appreciated, but not necessary, Ms. Vanderbilt.”

Melanie placed the phone down gently, and sighed for a second, before she trotted in to the bedroom to locate her husband’s Hotel information.

Although initially saddened by the upset, she felt uplifted somehow.

Although she contributed to a handful of local charities regularly, reaching out to Brad – another human in an hour of need – really felt good deep down inside for some inexplicable reason

Melanie reflected for a moment or two.

She’d be the first to admit that she basically tended to be self-centered and selfish in life.

Her thoughts drifted to Brad, for a moment.

Initially, Melanie and her husband received a formal invitation to the Matisse exhibit to attend the Opening Night Ceremonies, but due to scheduling conflicts they were forced to beg off.

Melanie proceeded to write a check for the charitable fundraiser the next day, though, and dropped it in the mail box out front for the postman to pick up, before she headed out for her class in fine line drawing.

On the way back to her upscale condo on the hill, her chauffer wisely chose a different route because of a detour that was causing mid-afternoon traffic to snarl just off of picturesque California Street.

As she glanced out the window, she was taken aback when she spied a young man stride into the gallery, who reminded her of an old acquaintance from the past.

“Fritz, please pull over to the curb,” she instructed her driver through the open glass partition, as she snatched up her pretty clutch purse and spiffy feathery bonnet designed by Sarah Burton from the leather seat next to her.

When the luxury Rolls Royce purred to a halt, Melanie arranged to meet up with the efficient snappily-dressed chauffeure in front of the St. Francis Hotel at Union Square at precisely 3 o’clock that afternoon.

Dark clouds hinted at inclement weather, but the socialite paid them no mind, as she set off for the stately grounds of the recently renovated Art Deco-Inspired Museum.

“Miss Vanderbilt. Welcome,” the assistant-curator gushed from across the lobby when his eagle-eye caught sight of her heading his way at a fast clip,

“We missed you at the opening. That was quite a soiree that you passed on!”

"It was quite a struggle to make all her appointments that day," she fessed up.

In fact, by the time the hour of the opening rolled around, Melanie was too pooped too participate and ended up taking a much-needed nap instead.”

“You must get your beauty rest, Miss. Vanderbilt,’ he chided, as he gave her an approving nod up-and-down.

The beaming staffer was all over her like a dirty shirt until she finally managed to wrestle herself free of his clingy personality.

“Whenever you want a private tour, give me a ding, eh dear?” he called after her from his perch by the exquisitely carved antique floor-to-ceiling doors, as she dashed off.

“Thank you, Gimble. Will do. I’m just taking a quick breeze-through today.”

What a shock!

Brad could actually boast that he’d never been arrested – or ever omitted a crime against nature, or man, or beast to his knowledge - at least until that fateful night on a poorly-lit alley in Hollywood.

The night started out in a celebratory mood.

Shortly after he passed through security at Jet Blue’s ultra-chic high-security pit stop at Terminal 2 at LAX, Brad spied Ted right-off-the-bat chatting up a uniformed Chauffeur at the pedestrian walkway.

The outgoing school pal was awaiting Brad’s arrival, no doubt.

When Ted caught his eye, he sprinted over to his handsome childhood friend and hugged him tightly for a second, before he plucked up Brad’s overnight canvas bag from a mini shopping cart and pointed Brad in the direction of the upscale rental courtesy of his boss’s company.

“Get a load off, Brad. And, welcome to Los Angeles,” his pal bellowed out.

“Gosh, where have I heard that catchy phrase before,” Brad laughed out loud, as the driver swung the door open wide to reveal the plush interior replete with a stocked bar and wide-screen digital TV in the back seat.

A few seconds later, on the heels of a jet roaring overhead, the winsome twosome shouted at each other non-stop in a bold-faced effort to rise above the din and catch up on old times.

Within minutes, both men were settling back in the finely appointed interior with cold thirst-quenching brewskies in hand and relaxing into the delightful ride into town.

“Good to see ‘ya big buddy,” his pal beamed.

Brad glanced out the open window now and then - and never stopped marveling at the palm streets fluttering in the breeze, the state-of-the-art thruway moving the cars along smoothly at breakneck speeds, and a handful of architectural wonders that that dotted the side of the road en route to Beverly Hills.

“Is it always churning incessantly like this in the City Of Angels,” Brad quizzed his pal through disbelieving eyes.

“No,” Ted kidded.

“When the word got out that you were jetting in to town, all the dudes and dudettes got gussied up for the occasion.”

“This is the welcoming gang, bro,” he yelped ecstatically as he popped his head out the moon roof and shouted out at the top of his lungs - "Life is Good" - as other commuters whizzed by and honked in respon.

“Get your fat head back inside your fucking pie hole, you gas-guzzling pig,” one passenger yelled back in disgust from a pick-up truck one lane over zipping by at dizzying high speeds.

“Suck my big black cock,” Ted roared back, in spite of the obvious.

He was a skinny old-fashioned white boy from the burbs, after all.

The two of them nearly bust a gut when the late-model Ford skidded out-of-control for a second or two. The shocked red neck nearly shit his pants when he was forced to gear down and edge his way slowly off the freeway as a tunnelful of dust enveloped him in darkness at the off ramp to the diamond lane with two Squad cars wailing in pursuit.

In the rear-view mirror, he caught sight of the asshole shaking his fist into the air.

"Motherfucker!"

Welcome to the mean streets of Los Angeles was more like it as this wild juncture.

“Just another typical day on the 10 in the sunshine state,” Ted chuckled, as his friend egged him on.

Gosh, I feel like such a hick. Look at that sprawling metropolis ahead of us stretching out as far as the eye can see."

“I call it the big bad orange,” his friend laughed wickedly.

Ted glanced at his watch and his mood shifted a tad.

“Once we arrive at the Beverly Hills Hotel, you can lug your knapsack into your bungalow, and unpack. Freshen up a smidgen. Then, we’re kickin it ‘round town. Sound good, dude?”

‘”Bungalow?” he queried his friend.

“I thought the Beverly Hills Hotel was this big ritzy Hotel. A Pink Palace. With every imaginable amenity available. Isn’t it owned lock-stock-and-barrel by the – Prince of Dubai – the richest man in the world?

“Gosh, you’ve done your Travel and Leisure homework,” Ted started off slowly.

“The main section of the Hotel is quite fabulous. And, that’s where the bulk of the guests reserve a suite at going rates. But, skirting one outer edge off of the Main Hotel on a side street, off the lobby, there is a small enclave of prestigious luxury suites usually booked for celebrities, movie stars, and the captains of industry.”

Brad’s eyes bulged a tad, as he reacted to the prospect of hunkering down in those exclusive digs.

"Heck, I'm so unsophisticated," he kidded sarcastically with a twang in his voice.

“Hee Haw!”

Brad was particularly impressed when his friend revealed that legendary Howard Hughes used to be a permanent resident in one of the stand-alone cottages.

“Every afternoon room service was expected to deliver a hamburger to the Hughes’s suite."

If the reclusive multi-millionaire failed to answer the door, the staff had been instructed to deposit the silver tray on the mat at the foot of the door, until the following day when it was replaced with another, according to Ted.

“If the waiter didn’t follow specific instructions, heads would roll!”

“Imagine how many bodacious babes paraded through his door at the witching hour,” Brad wondered aloud.

“Marilyn Monroe, for starters," he quipped back.

“THE Marilyn?”

“Yup. He wined and dined a whole a slew of actresses that he kept under contract at his - cough – studio,” Ted joked, as he checked his image out in the rear view mirror before entering the Hotel.

“The old coot used to park his car right there at the curb.”

And, even though it was a no parking zone, the local police drove right by and paid it no mind apparently.

“Except in one respect,” he chuckled.

“How’s that?”

“They’d write up a ticket, of course.”

"They ticketed Howard Hughes?"

Uh-huh!

“Hughes didn’t mind paying for the tickets, as long as his car was there whenever he needed it, rain or shine. And, you know what?”

Brad shook his head as he hung on every syllable.

“He’s on record for having the most tickets of all the residents of Beverly Hills."

As Ripley would say – “Believe it or not!”

Rumor had it that Elizabeth Taylor was a tenant at the Beverly Hills Hotel with her parents first emigrated from England to Hollywood, he noted matter-of-fact.

“You’d like this bit of trivia, Brad. Liz’s father (she hated to be called Liz, by the way) was an art dealer and he owned a gallery on the first floor of the Hotel. That’s one of the reasons Taylor collected fine art over the course of her distinguished career.”

“And, George Michael got busted in that Men’s room in that park over there,” he noted in a slightly hushed voice.

“Shut up,” Brad reacted excitedly.

“I’ll definitely steer clear of that glory hole. I’m not into toilet sex. In fact, the smell of urine has no raunch appeal whatsoever,” he exclaimed to Ted slightly amused.

Ted suggested that they get themselves paged in the Polo Lounge, too.

“Whatever for,” asked Brad incredulous.

“In the old days, to be paged while having lunch at the Polo Lounge, was a status symbol. So, it wasn’t long before struggling actors and writers were arranging for their friends to call them at the Hotel, so big-wigs lunching poolside would hear their names over the loudspeaker. Anything to get noticed, in this town, Brad!”

"It's easier now that folks have cell phones, though."

After splashing a bit of water on his face, and changing into a clean wardrobe ensemble (consisting of a black “t” shirt etched with an image of Lady Gaga on its face, tight black levis with gold flourishes, and designer Leather/Brand boots) Brad headed out front and struck a pose under the Hotel’s ubiquitous awning just as the sun – a golden orb – slipped down behind the horizon in a blaze of crimson.

At the designated hour, the stretch-limo wonder of the western world crept out from behind the grand old Hotel – at which point - Brad was greeted by Ted who was earnestly snorting up a line of cocaine.

“Steer this baby to the strip,” Ted called out to the uniformed driver, as he sniffed back a little of the white power that got lodged unexpectedly in one nostril.

Judging from Chauffeur’s reaction in the rear-view mirror, the dalliance with the potent drug – all the rage in Hollywood party circles – did not escape his keen eye.

“That’s how the gossip mill gets started,” Brad grimaced to himself.

Was Ted addicted, or just blowing off a little steam, before the EyeWear convention kicked off at the Historical Roosevelt Hotel over the weekend?

Brad was jolted out of his momentary funk when Ted passed a rolled-up hundred-dollar bill his way.

Inside, Brad panicked, for good reason.

On the surface, he played it cool.

“I’m nursing a hang-over, Ted,” he fibbed. “One tail of the dog that bit me, please.”

He was careful not to give impression that Ted’s choice of party favors was bad news, after all.

Addicts preferred company in their ride to euphoria and didn’t warm up to the idea of being around a downer with a holier-than-thou attitude.

The problem with cocaine was that it was “mind addicting”.

And, a difficult monkey to wrestle off even the strongest drug-addled individual’s back.

As he was reflecting on the issue, he was suddenly jolted back to the surface of his consciousness to find Ted tugging toyingly at his arm.

“Brad, there’s the infamous property where the Saudi Prince scandalized the world when he painted graphic genitals on the statues outside of the mansion."

"It used to be an exquisite white mansion – one of my favorites in the neighborhood - before the Sheik turned it into a gaudy nightmare."

"Tourists used to drive up to take shots of it to show people how positively ugly it was when they returned home from their vacations to the California."

“Heh, whatever happened to that Dude, anyway?”

"The Mansion burned down under suspicious circumstances, and stood vacant – and remained an eyesore – for decades."

“Then, one day he up-and-split from Beverly Hills, just like that,” Ted elaborated, as he leaned forward to taka glance at the two new Mansions recently erected on the site under the shadow of the scandal.

“One news outlet reported that when he skipped town, he stiffed everyone – the chef, the maids, even the gardener – so they filed a lawsuit for recovery of back wages."

“For years, the property was in litigation, and until a few months ago, was barren and overgrown with weeds and wild flowers.

Tight-assed uppity residents of Beverly Hills wrung their hands in dismay over that one for years on the sidelines vowing “never again," laughed Ted.

In a follow up to that juicy tidbit of local lore, Ted noted that a few years ago a foreigner tried to erect a huge monster of a house on Tower Road in a picturesque out-of-the-way enclave in Beverly Hills.

But, neighbors – like well-known actor Jack Lemmon – petitioned City Hall to reject what was originally supposed-to-be a single-family dwelling - when (in fact) - it wasn’t by any stretch of the imagination.

"I expect the city building codes have been amended and enforced to restrict outrageous blueprints for excess in the future."

"What a tangled up fiasco that was!”

At this juncture, Ted pointed out a stately-looking mansion that was allegedly the childhood digs of Shirley Temple.

Brad spotted a French Colonial that caused him to leap to the window in awe.

“Yeah, that is one of my favorite luxury estates along this strip. I have vowed to stride through the front door into the foyer one day, come hell or high water,” Ted exclaimed excitedly.

“When that happens, I’ll probably faint dead away.”

“Actually,” Ted giggled (the effect of the drugs were obviously setting in), “I was tempted to crash a party there one night when I noticed the gates were wide open and the chic guests were trekking into the Mansion in swarms without any security details in sight.”

“I chickened out, last minute, though. I’ll say one thing about that couple who breezed into the White House gala dinner last year uninvited. They had a couple of sets of big brass balls on 'em, alright.”

Ted continued to play Tourist guide as the limo arrived at the foot of the retail strip at the edge of the residential part of Beverly Hills.

At the end of the strip where the nightclubs began, Ted pointed out the infamous Rainbow, where a multitude of musicians – famous and infamous – gigged over the years.

“I saw Paul Williams sitting at the bar one night, tossing a cocktail or two back,” Ted boasted to his envious pal.

Ted noted that quite a few groupies hung out there, consequently.

“I’m sure Cherry Vanilla rustled up a subject or two in the bar downstairs over the years. I wouldn’t be surprised if – in addition to David Bowie, Mick Jagger, and Iggy Pop – she also nabbed plaster casts of Lou Reed’s cock, too.

“I was never a star fucker, but I liked to get in on the action whenever I was in town, if possible,” Ted confided off-the-cuff.

“See that blacked-out store front? That’s where River Phoenix overdosed. For months, there was a shrine at that very spot. Thousands of fans made a pilgrimage to that hallowed spot to pay their last respects and gawk.”

Some of Ted’s trivia was odd-ball and off-the-wall.

He was like a sponge, soaking up everything, a human factoid gatherer.

For example, he could point out the restaurant that whipped up the best waffles, according to talk-show Host Merv Griffin.

Or, the location of the very first Famous Amos chocolate chip cookie outlet on Sunset in Hollywood.

“That parking lot next to Tower Records used to be the site of a two-star Hotel where Hollywood hopefuls often crashed when they first stumbled into tinsel town to seek fame and fortune.”

“Once when I was by the pool catching some rays, I met this struggling comic down from Toronto, to perform at one of his first gigs. His name? Howie Mandell.”

“I literally bumped into Sonny Bono exiting Book Soup when I was strolling inside to pluck up a book."

Across the street, on the second level of a small building, Wolfgang Puck opened his first Spago restaurant in WeHo.

And, who could ever forget – certainly not the old-timers – that Schwab’s Drugstore (where Lana Turner was allegedly discovered on a stool at the counter) was a popular hang-out for show-biz types to while away an hour or so in the morning before heading off to the studio.

As they pulled up to the Director’s Guild of America, Ted quickly started to pull himself together.

“Wow! My first red carpet strut,” Brad mused, as Ted ran his hand through his disheveled mop to straighten a few unruly strands a tad.

“There will be quite a few Asian American stars here because it is the opening night gala for the Asian Pacific Film Festival."

Sure enough, they spied Sandra Ho, right off-the-bat.

Later in the week, Taiwanese Pop Star – Leehom Wang – was expected to trigger a mob scene at one of the venues when his big-budget feature – Love in Disguise – .screened to a sold-out house.

Wang was Taiwan’s answer to Justin Bieber, according to Ted, who kept pop music chart-toppers on the tip of his tongue.

“Bruce Lee’s daughter was here last year to officiate at a tribute to her father. That was a sell-out program which ended in a wild par-tay after-hours."

"Tonight’s glittering gala will be a blow-out, too."

The Asian community knew how to toss a glitzy, adrenalin-rushing, Hollywood-style party.

The delectable mouth-watering sweets, delicious chicken wings, and imported beer kept the servers circulating the tony elite for at least three hours before the festive high-energy event started to slow down a bit.

Once again, Ted used the occasion to chat up contacts – glean breaking-news tidbits – and stay on top of upcoming trends.

“You have to keep abreast of sports scores, political events, and who was “hot” in the industry – to schmooze effectively – if you hope to zoom up the social ladder," Ted lectured his pal.

As this juncture, Ted had to take off and finish up work on a project for San Francisco.

Will you be okay if I let you loose?

Scandals...of the Privileged Few! A novel by Julian Ayrs! Chapter One!

Robert Steele drew back the custom-made curtain from the outer edge of the large bay window and glanced up at the billowing clouds that hung overhead as a jagged fragment of lightning crackled and lit up the sky in the distance.

"Damn," the trim thirty-something lawyer muttered to himself.

"It looks like torrential rains are on the way. Again."

Not one to step gaily into the bustling city street with dreaded umbrella in hand (hated 'em) the foot-loose-and-fancy-free bachelor made a point of making a pact with himself that he would flag down a cab if necessary.

After all, it wasn't a smart move - by any person's standards - to stride into the office late first day or looking for all-the-world like a drowned rat.

Bolton, Bartholomew and Franklin was a staid business concern.

Although, there weren't any practical perks - such as health insurance, expense accounts, or even the luxury of a private parking spaces on the premises - there was a potential for advancement according to one Senior partner who took Steele under his wing for some inexplicable reason.

The rag-tag gang of activists could be heard chanting their mantra a half-a-block away, as they marched up Castro Street waving ubiquitous signs with heartfelt slogans emblazoned on their face, protesting the plight of the poverty-stricken.

"Stop homelessness now," the boisterous mob cried out to all within earshot.

Butch, one of the organizers of the weekly street demonstrations - hummed the notes of an old Joan Baez folk tune under-her-breath - as she sporadically approached pedestrians on the sidelines for donations when the mood struck her.

"I'm a walking cliche, I know" the die-hard romantic cackled to one middle-aged gent, who smirked on the sidelines amused.

From the get-up - she was comfortable in a pair of slightly-faded khaki cargo pants, teamed with a loud red plaid shirt fashioned in soft brushed cotton, and sensible black tie-up boots with sturdy heels to anchor her to the pavement when she walked - Butch gave the appearance of a no-nonsense down-to-earth diesel dyke through-and-through.

It wasn't always the case, though.

In her formative years, she was essentially a fragile porcelain doll, thanks to a dotting Mother anxious to shower her only daughter with all the niceties of life that eluded her after she took flight from the warmth and security of her parents once-comfortable home.

When Grandpa lost his first fortune in the crash of 1929, the once-fabulously-rich threesome barely survived the hardships, that descended out-of-the-blue one God-forsaken day.

While under hypnosis, a psychiatrist later dredged up a truckload of troubling childhood memories, that had been lurking beneath the surface of her consciousness for years - which ultimately - had been traumatizing her without her being none the wiser.

When her favorite uncle - Todd - jumped to his death from the top of the Stock Exchange, she was forced to recall that socialite friends cruelly wondered aloud if it was proper etiquette for the troubled man to commit suicide on public property.

Sick a**holes!

Dixie - Butch's dear mother, bless her heart - made a vow to herself that fine day that her own precious children would never suffer the insults of cold unfeeling in-laws if she had to beg, borrow, or steal to accomplish that end.

If necessary, she'd throw caution to the wind, and marry into money!

___________________________________________________

In spite of the loathsome task at hand, Butch's thoughts drifted to "Chad" - her long-time confidante who was suffering through a sex change that was proving to be a highly emotional and physical challenge.

The winsome twosome met at an AA meeting in a run-down old Church situated on the less trendy end of Robertson Boulevard in West Hollywood (affectionately known to the locals as gay gulch) and quickly became fast (loose?) buddies!

Film buffs may recall that WeHo was once a outlaw hang-out way back when, which was depicted in scandalous colorful detail in the Russell Crowe flick "Hollywood Confidential".

Although, Chad's mother (a dance-hall Diva with a bevy of pop hits to her name) was behind her daughter (son?) at least one-hundred-percent, the shy misfit couldn't help but be leery about the outcome of the remarkable sexual transformation fast-approaching.

Obviously, there was no turning back.

Needless to say, Chad pined for an intimate relationship with a pretty female companion - a lipstick lesbian - perhaps?

But, because of the traditional values she was exposed to during her child rearing, Chad was forced to go under a surgeon's knife to make it "right".

Was it possible to fall in love, and find bliss away from the prying eyes of hurtful naysayers in Hollywood, in spite of the odds against it?

Butch, though capable of understanding her dilemma, didn't envy her friend troubled friend.

Chad was undergoing such a radical identity change, after all.

"As long as you're happy," Butch found herself lamely lamenting soulfully to her pal one day.

No matter how you cut it, Chad was heading down the road less travelled, for better or worse.

Would she survive the ordeal?

Danny turned on his right side, let out a loud yawn as he clawed the air playfully, then flexed a muscled leg beneath the designer sheets.

Say what?

He found himself rubbing-up against the silky smooth skin of a well-defined muscled bod, next to him on the big comfy Queen-size bed!

Out-of-the-corner of one eye - it did not escape his attention, Sir! - that he was in the company of a hunky son-of-a-gun, alright.

Then, as the cobwebs of sleep took flight from the early-morning fog that once-enveloped him, the events of the night before fluttered into his consciousness image by image.

Ah, now all the delicious pieces were falling into place, to complete the puzzle.

After a rough day at the studio, he was inclined to dash off to the local pub - a popular watering hole by the hilarious unlikely name of - The Rooster & the Jug - for a brief respite from the pressures of a strenuous day toiling over a handful of tedious drawing boards.

Within a half-hour-or-so, Danny (a self-styled bisexual) found himself trading quips with a handsome blond surfer-type, squeezed into a dusty pair of faded blue jeans topped with a skin-tight black "T" with the words "pump it" etched on its face.

The kid - from Utah, if he recalled correctly - had an infectious grin.

And, the studly dude was packing a thick inviting tool between his muscled legs, which triggered pangs of sexual desire in the randy depths of his very soul right-off-the-bat.

Gosh, it was about two weeks or so, since his last erotic encounter in a back alley in the Mission District.

Though the dude was obliging when it came to a quick blow-job, he begged off when it came to the question of jotting down the number of his cell.

"Sorry," he grinned sheepishly, as he zipped up his fly and flashed a wedding band dangling on a glittering gold chain around his masculine neck.

"Taken."

"Slut," Danny thought to himself, as he strode off licking his wounds.

For a week or two, he was off men, after that humiliating brush-off.

What do they say?

Forget the romance.

Whip it in!

Wipe it out!

Wipe it off.

Wonder what Brad's story was, Danny wondered to himself, as Prince Charming suddenly moaned and stirred to life.

Danny reached under the quilt (Martha Stewart, of course) and grabbed a-hold of his junk.

Within minutes, the stud's cock was sporting a roaring hard-on - at which point - his hunky bed mate jumped him for another round of sizzling hot sex.

___________________________________________________

"Wow, that's quite a spectacular view," Brad gushed, as he pulled on his Calvin's and fumbled with his open fly.

To the left, Grace Cathedral hugged a pristine blue cloudless sky.

Below, the picturesque city by the Bay, beckoned in all its stunning architectural (and scenic) beauty.

"And, that's quite a cock 'ya got there, too," Danny blurted out, bluntly.

"They say it's the girth that separates the men from the boys," Brad chuckled, as he turned a little flush in the face.

"You're hot enough to be an Abercrombie & Fitch model," Danny quickly responded, on the uptake.

"Aber - who?"

"How refreshing," Danny smirked to himself.

A hottie who doesn't have ambitions to be grace soaring billboards around the country half-naked.

"Do you own this pad," Brad quizzed Danny, off-the-cuff.

"I lucked out. It's a sub-let. I'm kind-of a glorified house-boy," he chortled, as he hungrily ate up the delicious striking image of manhood at the foot of his bed.

"Shall I get all sentimental and jot down my phone number," Brad teased.

"I'll do 'ya one better. I''ll treat you to breakfast at Hugo's, kiddo."

Scandals of the Privileged Few!

Los Angeles Times Festival of Books...Rainn Wilson, Jamie Lee Curtis, Patrick Oswalt to appear!

Book lovers are gearing up for another fantastic year at the annual Festival of Books sponsored by the local Los Angeles Times.

But, before they trot off, they'd better take note that the much-anticipated event - which attracts thousands of book worms each year - has switched venues.

Uh-huh!

A few celebrities such as - health guru Jamie Lee Curtis, actor Rainn Wilson, comic Patrick Oswalt, and rocker Pattie Smith (to name a few) - are also scheduled to push pet projects near-and-dear to their hearts and toss meet-and-greets with a fan or two as well.

I met Rainn on the red carpet of the premiere of his hilarious comedy - The Rocker - over a year ago in Las Vegas and he does not disappoint.

He's quick on the uptake, alright!

Patrick Oswalt, who hosted a Film Fest at the New Beverly Cinema in Hollywood in recent years, is also a fine comic who has the ability to crack folks up with rapid-fire jokes without much effort.

The Nation's largest Literary Fest (admission is free) opted for a change of scenery this year - and moved the whole dang kit 'n kaboodle - to the University of Spoiled Children (USC).

That other University - where the popular fest was previously held in recent years - must be hot under the collar for losing the popular gig, eh?

As usual, though, enthusiasts of the written word, families of-all-sexual-persuasions - and Angelenos from all walks-of-life - will be exploring the extensive offerings with wonder once again when the end of the month rolls around on campus.

In addition to the reams of publications that will be on the shelves (and ready to be snapped up), the two-day event will be sprinkled with celebrity appearances, live stage music, practical (and exotic) cooking demonstrations, book signings and insightful and informative Q & A's.

Seven outdoor stages are slated to be erected in the center of USC's campus to accommodate the guest artists, their adoring fans, and Joe Public.

Program highlights include the Target Children's Stage ( with Mo Willems, Jamie Lee Curtis, Mallory Lewis and Lambchop, The Okee Dokee Brothers and R.L.Stine), the Cooking Stage (featuring Duff Goldman from "Ace of Cakes" and master chef Thomas Keller), the YA stage (graced with young luminaries such as Gayle Forman, Judy M. Blundell and D.J. McHale), and The Times editorial staff (who will be involved in hands-on discussions sporadically throughout the weekend on the Los Angeles Times Stage and Pavilion).

Julian Ayrs...News Release! Artist returns to roots!

NEWS RELEASE

After engaging in a handful of artistic pursuits over the past decade or so – Canadian-born painter Julian Ayrs (and well-known blogger) – has returned to his roots.

“During a recent trip to San Francisco, I was inspired to take up the brush again,” he enthused in a recent interview.

Ayrs is currently working on a spanking-new series of paintings – crafted in pencil, chalk and water color – that is appropriately titled:

“Color, Spirit, and Light"

“The creations sprang up from an inner joy I experienced in recent days during a vacation to the picturesque tourist mecca. I find that San Francisco is very conducive to the creative spirit.”

Ayrs first exhibited his fine line drawings and sketches at Rochdale College in the fall of 1968 in his hometown (Toronto/Canada) @ 341 Bloor West.

A group show followed at the prestigious Galerie Allen in Gastown the following fall when he relocated to the West Coast of Canada.

The young painter's work was well-received by the local art community and noted art critics such as respected Joan Lowndes at the Vancouver Sun (Southam News).

A one-man exhibition of major pieces followed in March (1972).

In 1972 Ayrs was also commissioned to create street kiosks for the downtown core in Vancouver (B.C.).

The following year, the city also purchased a handful of original paintings to enliven the halls of public buildings and government offices.

A brief stint in New York City - and a tunnelful of images in the city's underground subway - inspired a series of graffiti paintings which were summarily unveiled at the tony Contemporary Royale Gallery (owned by high-flying financier Nelson Skalbania) in 1974.

The Vancouver Sun profiled Ayrs in a feature in the afternoon daily (reference/Holyoak).

For a brief period, Julian tried his hand at model ling. His face has graced the pages of slick ads for American Express, the Hudson Bay Company, T. Eaton Company, and Datsun.

In 1983, Ayrs jumped at the chance to pursue his literary interests once again, when he was offered a column in the Province Newspaper (Southam News).

Ayrs regular feature - "Dressing Right" (which focused on menswear and fashion) - appeared in the morning paper for a year-or-so before Ayrs up and moved to the U.S. to pursue an acting career.

Ayrs was first published by Coach House Press (IS.8/Victor Coleman/Editor) in 1968.

A short story - "Cottage Cheese" - was purchased for broadcast by CBC Radio in 1972 (Robert Chesterman/Producer).

Shortly after arriving in Los Angeles, Ayrs became a member of the Screen Actors Guild, and began landing acting jobs in Hollywood.

Julian first starred in the one-act play - The Marriage Proposal - by Anton Chekhov.

He was given the nod with an "Award of Merit" by Simpsons Drama Festival jurors early on in his budding career.

In Hollywood, the struggling actor managed to land a few bit parts on the popular TV sitcom "Murphy Brown", the comedy variety-show hit "In Living Color", and highly-rated daytime soap operas such as "General Hospital" and the "Young & the Restless".

For a period of approximately two years, Ayrs was also a Literary Agent representing screenwriters at Roy Wallack & Associates and the Camille Sorice Agency (both SAG franchised agents) respectively.

During his tenure at Wallack, Tom Hank's film production office invited Ayrs to submit story ideas for projects, with the specific aim of changing the actor's "Big" image, and the express hope that the rising star stretch his acting "muscles".

A scripted idea for an A.I.D.S. drama (conceived by Julian) was originally rejected by Hanks ("who didn't want to do an A.I.D.S. feature at the time) but later embraced for some inexplicable reason.

During the first season of Fox's reality show - "On the Lot" - which focused on fledgling filmmakers (Steven Spielberg/Executive Producer) - Ayrs was invited to pen a blog.

Ayrs' posts were often featured on the main homepage, and subsequently, he drummed a huge reader base interested in his daily musings on celebrities, show business-in-general, and what-have-you.

When the experimental night-time bill-of-fare was can celled, Ayrs moved over to Google, and started up his own blog which became known as "The Tattler".

Today, the Tattler has made Mr. Ayrs one of the world's best-known bloggers in the world (recognized at high-profile red-carpet events, in the bustling streets among the common folk, etc.)

http://www.ijulian.blogspot.com/

Daily, avid readers surf to the current highly-ranked site to peruse movie reviews, reports on celebrity figures, and catch up on his - at times controversial - social and political commentaries (with a main thrust on Pop Culture).

Ayrs intends to exhibit his new series of paintings in the near future in San Francisco, Los Angeles, and New York.

Julian Ayrs 5 Top Picks...Best Screenwriter! Oscar Race 2010!

If it isn't in the script, it probably won't end up on the silver screen.

And, even if it is - not matter how eloquently or succinctly expressed on the page - it might not either.

Of course, I am referring  to the written word!

If an actor or a director attempts to rewrite 'em - on the set, in their trailer, in the toilet room, wherever  - a lament from the author will undoubtedly ring out crystal clear from the edge of the great abyss - and harshly fall on all ears within earshot.

"Over my dead body!"

Even so, the almighty word is not always written in stone, once the artful turn-of-a-phrase has been rustled up out-of-the-blue.

I adhere to the old addage that words have power.

Words have the ability to - uplift, instill fear, inspire, cause hurt - you name it.

A wordsmith - with the magical gift to touch or utter up thoughts that resonate to the very core of a sentient being - is a rare and wonderful individual.

In the realm of screenwriting, in particular.

In the hands of a lesser talent - dialogue may end up stilted, a plot line inplausible, the ability to move one greatly lacking in emotion or righteous joy- you betcha!

As a former Literature Agent (who represented screenwriters) I can wholeheartedly attest to that fact!

With that in mind, I offer up my five (5) Top Picks for Screenplay for a feature film (Oscar Race 2010).

Here are the nominees not in any particular order:
