Wal-Mart is a massive contributor to officeholders in both major U.S. political parties, but especially those in the Republican Party -- so anyone who seriously thinks the company will be given pause by the probable illegality of its proposed actions is dreaming.

...While I appreciate the correlation between poverty and crime, that doesn't adequately explain why Sweden with its incredibly generous welfare system trends the same way as countries with less extensive benefits.
Is it that the welfare system in Sweden, or for that matter the US, isn't enough to adequately shift the strictures of poverty?
Good post, BTW.

Now that would be worth the MWSF entrance fee! I don't know why but this has to be the funniest thing I've heard on the board in months...

and waste data? i dont know...how useful is this...really?
You'd be able to update over Wifi too, of course.
others may find it useful, but why would one need to update on the go?
If you are away from your Mac that you sync with for an extended period of time.
I can't wait for this. Call me lazy, but I'm two small updates behind because I can't be bothered to sync my iPhone for fixes that don't affect me.
I'm hoping for wireless syncing with iTunes as well. The less I have to connect via a cable, the better.

When did we stop doing sane things in this country?
Wait a second, I was able to easily invest heavily in the future and still fix the budget problems, all while only cutting the military spending by around 25%. I had enough of a surplus, that I could have gone back and cut even less if needed, but would prefer to invest in US infrastructure and manufacturing capacity. Which, coincidentally, would be more important should the military need to rapidly grow than a few fancy trinkets (F22s, helicopters, etc...)

This is kinda creepy. It's good they're trying to fix the problem, but it sucks that there is a problem. I work in an elementary school as its computer tech and the district is going to give me & the techs @ the other schools in the district a MacBook to administer tests and stuff. If someone hacked into my MacBook, they can get a lot of info on both all the kids as well as the faculty.

I've always felt that WW2 was justified though the way we ended the war was unfortunate and un-necessary.
World War Two is a pretty bad example for pointing out a justified war. Consider the 28 long months that the US sat and watched. Consider that Pearl Harbor was not just a spur-of-the-moment attack perpetrated by a madman but a response to what was considered an aggressive position taken by the US (cutting off oil exports to Japan).
There was an organization called "America First" which lobbied hard to remain neutral in the face of that conflict over there in Europe (because a great many Americans — including JFK — were of the opinion that WWI was entered for the benefit of the bankers). America First even objected to Lend-Lease, without which Britain might well have fallen to the German assault.
If America had taken a timely, proactive interest in protecting her allies from Germany's empire-building adventurism, millions of lives would probably have been spared. This is the lesson we should take thence. Blithely allowing crazy leaders to pursue empire unchecked is a recipe for worse to come. What happens elsewhere is not necessarily somebody-else's-problem.

Cost aside for the moment, it's Microsoft's decision to sell such a bewildering number of versions that I find so remarkable. I think it says a lot about Microsoft that they can't seem to settle on one implementation of Windows that would suit all users equally well. Apple has seen to it that the Mac is a Mac. Windows is now like a half-dozen vaguely different things, depending. Another level of confusion, introduced deliberately.

Here is my setup
http://i1223.photobucket.com/albums/dd515/nikumba/room.jpg
Dell 2001FP on the left hooked up to my Win7 machine under the desk
Samsun SyncMaster 2494HS on the right, now connected to my MBP that is over on the left of the desk, using a standard PC keyboard and mouse with the MBP at the moment.
The little black keyboard is a USB with trackball hooked up to the Win7 machine.
So far this is an experiment to use my MBP as my primary machine rather than just a laptop, so far so good, have sorted most things out I think.
I will eventually get rid of the Dell and but the MBP on the stand and have the Win7 machine hooked up to the VGA input on the Samsung monitor
Also ignore the dust :)

When new products are released in a keynote like the one coming up, are they normally ready to ship?
It just depends. Motorola was notoriously slow at ramping up production of new chips. Consequently, Apple would release new hardware and buyers would have to wait 1-3 months to receive them. That has since improved since Apple got a lot of bad press from that practice. I'm guessing that you'll have to wait a couple weeks for conroe & woodcrest based systems and perhaps a month for merom.

Great update for these. The aluminum is much more durable on iPods. My wife's mini was great!......now we'll have to get one of these :)
When I saw the official pictures the new iPod Nano does look like a reduced-size iPod Mini. :)
But here's the question though: when we see protective cases for the new Nano?

There are still more than 500 Radio Shack's left? Can't believe they're not out of business yet lol!
I've been asking that question for years. I have NO idea how they're pulling it off. They're not growing, in fact they're shrinking. I remember when they actually sold TVs and receivers and all sorts of stuff. Now, yeah, I go there for the odd connector or cable or electrical tools...or on occasion, specialty batteries like CMOS batteries. That's it and only then because Frys is too far away for such a small purchase.
Them selling iPad 2 makes me wonder who approached whom. Was Radio Shack desperate to carry it or is Apple trying to offload the management from its own stores?
So Walmart is full of obese hillbillies?

And isn't the 128mb 7300 still much better than the 256mb 1600?
Yes, it is still better. Although the 7600, for $125, will make things even better than that.

The vast majority of gun incidents and stabbings happen within gangs, it's the parents fault for not educating their child to keep away from them. I know for instance that stabbings in London is highly overstated, in that London I think is the most populated capital in Europe and so it's inevitable for these frequent occurrences.
I don't consider London particularly dangerous, as long as you stay away from the places notorious for having yobs and gangs during the evening.

It would be very interesting to read Lord of the Rings and have the soundtrack playing - synchronised to where you're up to in the book. Or the book with excerpts from the movie.
Or pictures synchronized with an audiobook, or an ebook together with the preferred music from the author. This ads a whole new dimension to everything, Music, text, pictures and movies can all be combined into 1 work of art.
